MEETING MINUTES San Diego Green Party August 6, 1999 County Council Meeting Meeting opened at 7:10 Attendees: County Council Members: Linda Martin, Ric Newbury, Aubyn Stahmer (notetaker), Tammy Tatum, Gary Waayers (facilitator), Robyn Waayers, Joe Mortz, Ann Menesche General Membership: Visitors: Jim Ricker ____________________________________ ANNOUNCEMENTS Gay Pride Event: Over 80 real contacts, 20 registrations and lots of visibility in the community. Many people have called Joe regarding issues and wanting Green support. Joe sent a letter of thanks and information. Joe was happy with the feedback he received. Gary is going to try to contact all 277 Greens in his district to kick off his campaign with a picnic or other activity. Probably in Carmel Mountain or Mira Mesa area. Carmel Mountain: Don't want to stir things up politically yet and would like that whenever the deal goes, good or bad, they would like Green support for celebration or protest. Developer wants 8 million dollars for the property. NC Times yesterday, front page article about the voters changing the general plan in other north county cities. Jerry Harmon article. ____________________________________ STATE PLENARY -Gary listed the consent items for the upcoming meeting. These can be obtained from earlier email or State Green Party Web Page. Does anyone have any objections to any of the consent items? No one has any concerns that cannot stand aside. Our delegates will vote for consensus. ____________________________________ NADER CAMPAIGN Gary introduces: The state of CA: 2 ways to get your name on the ballot. 1. Political party can ask that your name be put on the ballot or 2. If you are a national figure you can ask the secretary of state to be placed on the ballot (has to do with amount of media exposure). The Green Party can nominate someone to be on the ballot (as many as they want) needs to be done by early November or Candidate can get signatures to get on the ballot. GPCA- Nader has not decided if he is going to run but since we have a deadline he has authorized GPCA to put his name on the ballot. Proposal is to put his name on the ballot. Nader has declined to state his registration. He is registered in Conn. Where there is Green Party. Joe is concerned since he has heard Nader say some statements that seemed anti-civil rights including same sex marriage and racial issues. Ric-says Nader didn't want to discuss those issues and was misunderstood. Joe-Nader supporter, but hasn't seen him make statements that support Green social, civil policies and platforms and he is not an affiliate of our party. To what benefit is there to the Greens for endorsing him as a candidate. He has the option to gather signatures in this state on his own until winter. Linda-it would send a very strong message if CA decided not to put him on the ballot. Many have decided that Nader has a lock on the nomination because many leaders are supporting him. It may have scared off people who may have run otherwise, such as Michael Moore who is registered Green. Nader has done some things that are not very Green. Charles Douglass-serious graduate student who wrote and said Nader was charged with 'churning' nasty stock trading thing that is lots of trades that stimulate the market. Nader didn't fight, just paid the fine. 'Abuse of trust' is a book that reveals lots and Nader never sued so probably documentable info in the book. Jim-people make mistakes, he has done lots good. But does he have to be the Green Party Candidate? Linda-may not be anyone else but in 96 many were working hard to get him on the ballot etc and no organization is set to do that in 2000. Linda's sense in Green's may not cooperate this time. Nader runs a very top down shop. Not very grass roots. Concern with management style and treatment of employees. Ric-concern that Nader is boring. He isn't going to President but we should be concerned that someone can articulate the green message and get the media campaign and he can't really do that. Joe: Poor stand on civil rights Poor articulator of Green Values Not registered Green Need more than one person on primary If he really wants to run, get sigs. Gary: 'politics' of it. Nader has money and someone else may not. Does the Green party use him to get the matching funds. Linda-only way to get it is to have 40 states with him on the ballot and probably won't happen. Gary: would rather use energy for local campaigns unless there is someone really dynamic to put on the ballot. ACTION: For the San Diego Delegates, we will not support Nader for the Presidential candidacy. Stand aside or not? Joe would stand aside if there were more people he would but not if Nader alone. Linda thinks CA not putting Nader on may send a message to Michael Moore. ACTION: We do not stand aside. ____________________________________ TREASURERS REPORT See report submitted by Joe Mortz. Joe will talk with the bank about service fees. Should have been free with free checks. Garage Sale: Linda's friend will donate lots of stuff to sell. Robyn, Gary and Linda cleaned this woman's garage and got some stuff to sell and hopefully some things to consignment that she may donate. Treadmill, TV etc. for sale to try to get some $$ for this to donate. August 28th 8:00 (set up at 7) Saturday Bobbie Mcarthy's on San Thomas place. Robyn will send out an announcement. Additional stuff for sale goes to Robyn and Gary. ____________________________________ CONCERT UPDATE General discussion that we would get a small place and have a small party and solicit donations etc. Small party that we know will be successful and can do it cheaply. Fundraising committee will meet and discuss. ____________________________________ SELECT DELEGATES We can have six delegates to go to Santa Barbara meeting Aug 14th and 15th Delegates will be: Joe, Linda, Ric, Tammy, Gary, Robyn Held at West side community center in Santa Barbara. Nancy Broils is the housing person so you can contact her for housing. ____________________________________ RESTRUCTURING WORKING GROUP Linda trying to get the party to see itself as a real political party. Mike Feinstein hijacked the process. He came up with recommendations from what he called a restructuring working group. The rest of the group said no, this is not what we discussed. The group is not accepting most of the recommendations. Lucy ? is the new coordinator of the group. First face to face meeting in SB. Linda invited everyone to join the group if interested. Group trying to make working groups more efficient and more accountable. Trying to get some follow through and continuity. Linda thinks it is a good sign that people are serious about putting structure into the State party. Gary agrees that the same thing happened with a working group he joined that he then heard nothing about. Recommendations came out but the group had never met. Want to break into regions that work as regions to make the party work better. Easier to meet face to face. Linda feels we need broad based participation with a person from each working council on the working group so that people can support it. She feels many things Mike suggested will go forward but in the context of a working group and people who support it. Ric suggested sending the document to the working group for consideration as a document that an individual developed. Linda thinks Lucy will be saying this. ____________________________________ MEETING SITES Dave's is here and free, but it is cold and parking is difficult. Not enough room for general membership meetings. Looking at the BIG KITCHEN. One room will hold 25 people. Plenty of parking. Proposal to continue to have CC meetings here at Dave's Coffee Shop and the General Membership meetings at Big Kitchen pending Jim asking if it is ok. -Big kitchen a little difficult to get to and Jim feels it is hard to find and people may not come. -Ric is hopeful that we will find a room at a college when school starts. ACTION: We will be here for the next CC meeting and continue looking. We can use the back room for the October General Membership meeting. Jim Bell gave us a call and would like to speak to our group. Running for Mayor. Registered Democrat, used to be registered Green. Concerns from Ann since he is a Democrat. Ann feels we can't expect people to think it is important to be a Green if we have a Democrat here who doesn't think it is important to be a Green. Tammy, Ric and Linda have issue with him as a candidate anyway. But he does have a following and it may draw people in. However is this a good first impression? ACTION: We do not want to have him as a speaker. ____________________________________ FEBRUARY PLENARY Joe is willing to take on the responsibility of setting up the plenary and finding a place etc. Tammy concerned about housing. But she will stand aside. Gary will email people at Orange County to see how many people needed housing at the last meetings. ACTION: We will offer to do the Feb. Plenary and Joe will Take charge. ____________________________________ PROPOSAL FOR GPUSA AFFILIATION Gary and Linda opposed to affiliation. Gary outlined his reasons in an email. Joe has a concern: he thought the arguments for the GPUSA sounded good. Ric's major concern is that they have intentions of running political campaigns and it is not clear if they would be running them where other organizations would be running. They can also set up locals in the same places that ASGP does. Lots of discussion on the issue. Joe feels we can affiliate and not confuse people. That more than one group can be good and diverse. He does not wish to stand aside. Ric feels if we affiliate now there is not incentive to negotiate a better relationship that does not cause confusion or dysfunction. Wants to send a message that they need to negotiate with the state groups. VOTE: Proposal is that the GPSD votes for affiliation with the GPUSA that is accept the proposal. In favor: 1 Not in favor: 7 ACTION: We will not vote for affiliation at the plenary ____________________________________ Next meeting is on Labor Day weekend. Can we meet another weekend? We are already booked here for Sept. 3. Action: Next CC meeting will be Friday Sept. 10? General Membership Friday October 1 at Dave's Coffee Shop in the back room if the weather is cold. ____________________________________ Meeting adjourned at 9:25
