Escondido Council member for 25 years, Escondido mayor for 4 years, Sandag, and many other community based efforts. Leads anti-growth efforts. Jerry will address the traffic in our area. 7:25 Jerry Harmon Discussion briefly summarized: Electrical engineer for the telephone company for 26 years and recently retired. Turf and Surf project a part of the Del Mar Fair Grounds. Fair now earns $200,000 per year in revenue from leasing. They want to lease property to large commercial developer to make more money-perhaps movie complex, mall etc. May bring in $2-4 million per year. This is publicly owned land. Many people got together to oppose the project including some developers (because Fair board would have an advantage because they don't have to pay for the land). A subcommittee of the Fair board recommended that all the proposals for development be turned down but this may not legal since they put out the call for proposals and developers spent $$ to put these proposals together. So, the project is stopped for now, but may come back. Petition against the project passed around. Trish Butler from planning commission for the City of San Diego. This land is in the city so that council makes the land use changes. The city of San Diego has been known to ok building in flood planes. Trish also was hired by the Fair board to put the proposals together. Big conflict of interest. The group will continue to solicit support in opposition to the proposal. This is one part of the bigger picture of the growth machine. Many people say La and Orange county have growth problems, but there is no way around it so just find ways to accommodate this. Jerry ran on idea that growth should be stopped (in the '70's). Escondido Citizens Ecology Committee-got them to be more politically oriented to educate people. Collected survey data in Escondido to assess what the people were thinking. People wanted to slow growth. City council incumbents ran on this issue but didn't follow through. Needed to get people with real no growth views elected. Similar to Green Party now! 1988 there became a majority with no growth views on the Escondido city council. Cut the growth in half on the general plan for Escondido. 1998 Escondido voted that the entire population gets to vote on changes to the general plan if there is an intensification of the plan. Need to have this same vote happen in other communities in the county. This will help ensure that general plans do not grow to more people than the planned 1 million new people coming to San Diego. Book recommendation: "Better not Bigger: How to take control of urban growth and improve your community" by Eben Fodor Petition: Traffic. People are focused on this issue. San Diego assoc. of gov. Regional traffic plan which forcasts heavy fwy congestion. 1995 30 miles (12%) of freeway in heavy traffic. In 2020 it will be 99 miles (34%). This is after we spend $15 billion on mass transit, freeways and local roads. They also have a plan that will allow us to have only 50 miles of gridlock if we spend $24 billion. Want developers to pay a region-wide development fee to make up the short fall of money to build the additional mass transit needed. We can have this one signed by others' in the area. We need to generate candidates who will embrace these principles so we can protect the environment and to slow growth. Question and Answer period ______________________________________________________________________ TABLING TRAINING Carl and Joe Members learned different methods for encouraging people to join the Green Party. Goals of tabling are to get the Green message to new people and educate them, encourage people to register Green, and solicit names of new volunteers. Choose things you believe in about the Greens and discuss those with potential members. We must register anyone who wants to register to vote even if it is not Green. It is illegal not to turn in the voter registration cards that we collect. Be sure everything on the card is filled out completely. Get the voter registration in the person's hand and don't take it back until you have checked everything since once they hand it back they are gone. ______________________________________________________________________ TREASURERS REPORT [Joe, can you repeat to me the dollar amounts you gave so I can write them here-sorry -- Aubyn] Money in account: Garage Sale Income: $191.00 (Thanks Robyn & Gary!) Money to Gary & Robyn for reimbursement: Current Funds: Money allowed to Tammy for T-shirts: (by affirmation) ______________________________________________________________________ RECOGNITION OF PINK GREENS Pink Greens were recognized by affirmation. There were some stand aside concerns regarding the number of members in the group. A group must have at least five active members. The by-laws indicate that if a group does not meet or remain active for over six months it is considered disbanded. ______________________________________________________________________ CONCERT EVENT Several concert options were discussed, including those discussed last meeting (see previous notes). Ideas were discussed regarding money-making versus publicity. How to market the event with minimal funds was discussed as was our ability as a group to sell enough tickets to fill a venue. In general the group seemed to favor the idea of having a smaller gathering with a minimal charge that would build membership and interest in the Greens rather than focus on raising funds at this time. This would build membership and people to assist with a larger event. A donation at the door might be the only charge with tabling etc. at the party. Carl will find a venue and a date in September at which time we will begin to advertise in local papers, hopefully since we are an event we can do so rather inexpensively. ______________________________________________________________________ Meeting adjourned at 9:40?
